5 Tips to Conquer Stage Fright

If you’re like most people, the thought of giving a presentation in front of an audience makes you break out in a cold sweat. But there are some things you can do to overcome your stage fright and give a great presentation. Here are five tips to help you get started:

Tip 1 Get in the Zone:

To overcome stage fright, the first thing you need to do is get in the zone. Take some time before your presentation to do some slow, deep breathing. Try this a few times until you feel calm. It’s also helpful to go off by yourself for a while and get in the zone. This will help you focus and be more prepared for your presentation. In addition, be sure to be positive. Put affirmations on your home mirror and say them to yourself before you go on. Imagine a positive outcome and that you’ve knocked it out of the park!

Tip 2: Improvise

One of the best ways to overcome stage fright is to learn how to improvise. As they say, stuff happens! Make a joke and go with the flow if something goes wrong during your presentation! This will help you relax and show the audience that you’re flexible and can handle anything that comes your way.

Tip 3: Eye Contact is Crucial

When you’re speaking in front of an audience, be sure to smile and make eye contact. Search out friendly faces in the crowd and smile and nod when you talk. This makes a connection with the crowd and can help you feel more confident as well.

Tip 4: Have a Strong Posture

It’s important to have good posture when you’re giving a presentation. Make sure you’re not hunching over the podium or microphone. If there is no podium, talk with your hands a bit. But whatever you do, don’t cross your arms or put them in your pockets. This will make you look closed off and unconfident. Instead, spread your feet apart about shoulder width and keep your arms open at your sides. This is often called “the power stance” because it exudes confidence.

Tip 5: Use Your Lectern

If you have a lectern, use it! This will help to anchor you and make you feel more secure. Place your notes on the lectern so you don’t have to worry about them getting lost or falling off the podium. And if possible, try to position yourself so that you’re facing the audience directly. This will help you feel more confident and in control.
